In 1995 I started a project documenting areas around Manhattan. I concentrated on New Jersey and Staten Island but more particularly on places that still had a tie back to Manhattan – either through line of sight or via some of the iconic bridges leading to it.

A week ago today, coming out of the Lincoln Tunnel and up onto the helix. We had just hit the 14-hour mark but the view back to Manhattan was too stunning not to stop and haul out the equipment yet again.

On location yesterday at the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts in Astoria, Queens, to photograph co-founder Susan Benedetto. Across the street? In all its glory, Kaufman Astoria Studios, once home to Paramount Pictures, when Astoria was the center of filmmaking in the 20′s and early 30′s.
