Judge Denny Chin, US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, in his courtroom. Feb. 23, 2011.

This past February I photographed Judge Denny Chin for Fordham Magazine. Judge Chin had presided over the Bernie Madoff case in 2009 and shortly after I photographed him he ruled on Google’s plan to digitize every book ever published, rejecting Google’s settlement with authors and publishers.

To give a sense of before and after here’s assistant Chris standing in for the judge: Judge Not.

A Million Ways to Mix Orange and Black

Once a year in a great migration Princeton’s Alumni return to campus. Unlike other schools, they pay no heed to the constraints of five or ten. Come they will and come they must.

Playing catch-up a bit. Here’s the fourth video in the series documenting the construction of my new studio/office. It was shot last fall as the trim work was being done. It’s so green at the moment that it’s nice to see some fall colors.

In editing the piece I really liked the percussive sounds juxtaposed with the saws and the occasional voices of the builders. So, no music track on this one, just the sounds of the work site.

Granite Janet

The last piece of the puzzle for the new studio, short of the grass growing in, is also its only indulgence. All other details have been selected with budget and function primary factors. For the short walkway to and from, it’s only about 10′, I wanted something special and close to my heart. For me, that’s Deer Isle/Stonington granite.

When it turned out that one color of the studio’s exterior HardiePanel was already called Boothbay Blue completing the Maine theme was preordained. I have vacationed in Maine off and on for over twenty years, having fallen in love with the Deer Isle – Stonington area. My web site has a Maine gallery and some of the images in my Family gallery are from Maine as well. You’ll find ample evidence of the granite in its raw state throughout the photos.

Finding Deer Isle granite and getting it to New Jersey is not as easy as it seems. Luckily, after much Googling I came across Swenson Granite Works and New Jersey is just within the delivery range for their Newtown, CT store. They pulled up yesterday in their brand new truck complete with a very cool wirelessly controlled crane.

Rounding out a week of web site updates, my People Portraits – Recent gets a whole new gallery. 24 images on 20 pages, all shot within the past year.

WordPress 3.1 Loses Video Embed Button

WordPress’ 3.1 update seems to have killed the video embed button. I couldn’t find it after upgrading and quick googling shows that it’s not a bug, it’s a feature (as they say.) Very annoying in that it makes it difficult to easily embed self-hosted videos and it makes it just as hard to go back and edit older video posts should they need a tweak.

There seems to be no work around short of using a plug-in. Some of those do allow for self-hosted video but having just switched to Vimeo – it’s far easier to sign up with them or use a similar service. **I’m using the Vimeo Quicktags plug-in and it’s a piece of cake. No more having to factor in the height of the Quicktime control bar or finding that FireFox and Safari are showing different video aspect ratios.

Vimeo seems to have many advantages – it’s one of those, I should have done this sooner moments.

-using Vimeo puts the server strain on them instead of my web host.

-viewers can now watch all videos in full HD. All they need is a free Vimeo account.

-if you sign up for Vimeo Plus the uploading is almost instantaneous and you get stats on what is viewed, where it was viewed, and if other sites embed the video.

-I have not used it yet but Vimeo has its own social side (communities, channels, likes, etc.)

**Update 01-02-12: Something just killed the Vimeo Quicktag Plug-in. Most likely culprit was updating WordPress site stats to WP’s Jetpack(?) Work-around seems to be ditch the plug-in and use Vimeo’s iframe embed code directly into the html of a blog post or WP has new directions here.
